Sight-Casting for Cobia Along the Beaches
One of the most exciting ways to catch cobia is to spot them swimming near the surface and present a lure directly to the fish.
During the spring migration, we'll search the coastal waters around Sebastian Inlet for cobia traveling along the beaches, following bait schools, and accompanying larger marine animals.
Cobia are frequently associated with rays, sharks, and other large marine life.
When we locate fish in suitable conditions, we'll position the Nauti Girl for a controlled casting opportunity while keeping a safe distance from protected wildlife.
Our Favorite Sight-Casting Techniques
Bucktail Jigs & Paddle Tails
Bright orange, yellow, pink, and white bucktail jigs paired with soft-plastic paddle tails can be excellent choices for aggressive cobia.
A properly presented jig can trigger an explosive strike from a cruising fish.
Live Pinfish
When cobia refuse artificial lures, a lively pinfish can make all the difference. These natural baits can be especially effective around structure and fish that aren't actively chasing jigs.
Live Eels
Live eels are another proven cobia bait. Their natural swimming action can tempt reluctant fish into striking.
Our crew will help anglers choose the appropriate presentation based on the conditions and the fish's behavior.
Wildlife Protection: Giant manta rays are protected. We maintain a respectful distance, never cast at the rays themselves, and avoid presentations that could foul-hook or entangle them. NOAA recommends keeping boats at least 50 feet away.
When the Cobia Aren't on the Beach, We Head Offshore!
Unlike trips that depend entirely on finding cobia near the beaches, our Cobia Hunter Charter includes an offshore backup strategy.
If sight-fishing opportunities are limited, we'll search productive fishing grounds offshore of Sebastian Inlet.
Our offshore approach may include:
Reefs, wrecks, and artificial structures
Hard-bottom ledges and underwater drop-offs
Bait concentrations and other fish-holding areas
Cobia traveling with sharks, when they can be targeted safely
Live-bait fishing and jigging around productive structure
Cobia are opportunistic predators that frequently travel around underwater structure and follow larger marine animals.
Our goal is to adapt throughout the day rather than depend on a single technique.
Why April, May, September & October?
Spring Cobia Fishing – April & May
Spring brings seasonal opportunities to encounter cobia moving through Florida's Atlantic coastal waters.
As water temperatures change and baitfish become more active, anglers may encounter cobia around the beaches, nearshore structure, and offshore fishing grounds.
These months are particularly attractive for anglers who enjoy sight-casting and active fishing.
Fall Cobia Fishing – September & October
Fall offers another opportunity to target cobia around Sebastian Inlet.
Depending on water temperatures, bait movements, and offshore conditions, fish may be found around reefs, ledges, and other productive areas.
Our fall trips emphasize flexibility, with Captain Scott selecting the day's fishing strategy based on current conditions.
Important: These are our preferred charter months, not official regulatory seasons or guarantees of fish availability.
Florida Cobia Fishing Regulations – What Anglers Need to Know
We believe responsible fishing is essential to protecting our offshore fisheries for future generations.
Under the currently published Florida cobia recreational regulations:
Minimum Harvest Size: 36 inches fork length
Daily Bag Limit: 1 cobia per person
Maximum Vessel Limit: 2 cobia per vessel, whichever limit is more restrictive
Measurement: Fork length, measured to the fork in the tail
These limits are currently listed for Florida Atlantic state and federal waters.
All harvested cobia must meet the applicable regulations, and fish that are undersized or exceed possession limits will be released.
We also encourage responsible handling and voluntary release of fish when appropriate.
2027 Regulation Notice: Fishing regulations may change. Captain Scott will verify applicable FWC and federal regulations before each charter.
